Background: Universal digital identity (ID) systems are now championed across Africa as indispensable to inclusion, efficiency, and economic growth. Yet the deeper geopolitical and theological stakes of this push remain under-examined. Objective: The present article critically evaluates African digital-ID roll-outs as potential infrastructures of surveillance and neocolonial power, interpreting their trajectory through a biblical-eschatological lens. Methods: Using critical discourse analysis, we triangulated 2020–2025 policy documents, peer-reviewed scholarship, and an insider testimonial from Burkina Faso with secondary datasets on exclusion and data flows. Results: We map an eight-domain “control lattice” in which a single biometric credential governs access to government services, finance, healthcare, education, employment, mobility, cybersecurity, and emerging carbon-credit scoring. Case evidence from Uganda, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso shows that database errors or policy toggles can instantly sever millions from welfare, communication, or emergency care, exemplifying what civil-society actors term “digital colonization.” Extraterritorial hosting contracts and loan conditionalities further place national registries under foreign jurisdiction, eroding data sovereignty. Discussion: These findings corroborate theories of data colonialism and algorithmic domination and resonate with the warning in Revelation 13:16 – 17 that economic participation may hinge on a compulsory mark. Nevertheless, self-sovereign and open-source pilots in Morocco and the Philippines demonstrate that privacy-preserving alternatives are feasible. Conclusion: Unless African states secure domestic data residency, transparent oversight, and rights-first design, universal digital ID is likely to evolve from a developmental tool into an architecture of digital dominion. The study advances a sovereignty-first framework that reconciles technological innovation with human dignity.
