The Bible: The Inspired, Infallible, and Authoritative Word of God

Abstract

This chapter presents the doctrine of Scripture as foundational to the Christian faith. The Bible is not merely a collection of religious reflections, inspirational writings, moral examples, or human testimonies about God. It is the written Word of God, given through human authors by the Holy Spirit, so that what Scripture says, God says. In the original writings, Scripture is inspired, infallible, and inerrant. In its faithful copies and translations, Scripture remains the reliable and authoritative Word of God for the Church. Because God is true, His Word is true; because God rules His people, His Word rules His people; because God has spoken sufficiently, no human authority may add to, subtract from, correct, or override Scripture. The chapter explains verbal, plenary inspiration; infallibility; inerrancy; authority; sufficiency; clarity; necessity; unity; canonical coherence; and the completeness of Scripture. It also introduces responsible interpretation through context, grammar, genre, authorial intent, redemptive-historical flow, the analogy of Scripture, and obedient application. Historical and doctrinal development is addressed without denominational polemics, including early Christian recognition of the canon, Reformation emphasis on Sola Scriptura, modern challenges to biblical authority, and evangelical clarification through statements such as the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. Common errors are examined biblically: that the Bible only contains God's Word, that experience or tradition may stand equal with Scripture, that the canon is arbitrary, that difficult passages make the Bible unreliable, or that Scripture is merely private spirituality rather than public truth. Contemporary infiltrations are also exposed, including Christ consciousness, occult Bible decoding, law-of-attraction readings, contradictory progressive revelation, channeling spirits, therapeutic self-centered interpretation, deconstruction that exalts doubt over obedience, and spiritual experiences that bypass biblical testing.
