God: The One True God, Creator, Sovereign Lord, and Holy Trinity

Abstract

This chapter presents the doctrine of God as the living center of Christian faith, worship, mission, ethics, education, and discipleship. Scripture reveals that God is not an impersonal force, not the universe, not an idol made by human imagination, not a tribal deity, and not a projection of human desire. He is the one living and true God, the Creator of heaven and earth, the self-existent Lord who declares, "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14), the Holy One who is worshiped by the heavenly host (Isaiah 6:1-3), and the sovereign Lord from whom, through whom, and to whom are all things (Romans 11:36). He is eternal, infinite, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, holy, just, righteous, loving, gracious, merciful, patient, faithful, and good. The chapter affirms biblical monotheism and the doctrine of the Trinity: there is one God in one divine essence, eternally existing in three distinct Persons - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This doctrine is not produced by philosophical speculation or ecclesiastical invention; it arises from the whole counsel of Scripture. The Bible teaches that the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God; yet there is only one God. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, and the Spirit is not the Father. The three Persons are coequal, coeternal, and consubstantial, one in glory, will, divine nature, and saving purpose. The chapter also addresses God's creation and providence, His transcendence and immanence, His sovereignty and human responsibility, the unity of His attributes, and the pastoral importance of knowing Him rightly. It exposes errors such as polytheism, pantheism, panentheism, modalism, tritheism, deism, process theology, open theism, religious pluralism, self-deification, manifestation spirituality, and cultural redefinitions of God. It responds to apologetic objections against biblical theism while insisting that human reason serves Scripture and does not judge Scripture. Finally, it applies the doctrine of God to worship, prayer, holiness, mission, family discipleship, theological education, pastoral ministry, and readiness for the return of Christ.
