Abstract

Background: Personal branding has become a global trend among professionals, including Christians, as individuals cultivate online profiles and “leadership brands” to advance careers. Yet the ethos of self-promotion conflicts with biblical teachings on humility, stewardship, and calling. Purpose: This study critically examines how Christian professionals, entrepreneurs, and ministers navigate personal branding in light of theological ethics. It exposes ways that secular marketing language and visibility metrics are adopted in Christian contexts, confusing social influence with spiritual impact. It also considers how aligning one’s career with popular globalist values can compromise Christian distinctives. Methodology: A secondary data-based approach is used, drawing on Scripture and current literature to form a Sola Scriptura-driven theological and ethical critique. Results: Findings indicate a clear tension between self-marketing practices and biblical virtues. Personal branding often centers on self-exaltation, whereas Scripture calls for humility and for one’s “brand” to reflect Christ. Practices like résumé boasting or platform-building can slide into sanctified pride, even as Christians rationalize them as “stewardship.” Moreover, worldly success metrics (followers, fame) are shown to be poor proxies for Kingdom impact. Conclusions: Christian professionals are urged to re-align their approach to promotion with a servant mindset, emphasizing integrity and service over image. They must remain alert to ways uncritical career alignment with global agendas may dilute their witness. This study contributes a theologically grounded perspective on an urgent issue at the intersection of faith and work.
