Toward a Christocentric Framework for Educator Ministry in Secular Higher Education: A Critical Integrative Review of Vocation, Pedagogy, and Witness

Background: Secular higher education is often presented as a neutral domain of knowledge transmission, yet it functions as a formative space in which truth claims, moral norms, identity, and belonging are constantly negotiated. For Christian academics, this raises a pressing question: how can the educator’s role be understood as legitimate ministry without collapsing into privatized faith, coercive religious influence, or pluralist relativism? Purpose: This article develops a biblically grounded, academically rigorous, and contextually informed framework for understanding educator practice as Christian ministry in contemporary secular higher education. Method: The study employed a critical integrative review of secondary data, synthesizing 24 substantive sources published between 2017 and 2026, including 17 peer-reviewed articles and 7 institutional or policy reports. Working from a Christian realist and Sola Scriptura stance, the review integrated scholarship on secular institutional culture, student wellbeing, belonging, spirituality, vocation, relational pedagogy, and worldview contestation. Results: Five major patterns emerged. First, the secular university is not neutral but morally and epistemically directional. Second, contemporary students learn under conditions of digital saturation, AI normalization, psychological strain, and weakened meaning structures. Third, belonging, trust, and teacher-student relationships materially shape learning and resilience. Fourth, Christian vocation scholarship strongly supports academic labor as calling, yet often under-specifies its evangelistic telos in secular settings. Fifth, educator ministry is best understood as a Christocentric practice of epistemic stewardship, relational care, moral modeling, vocational discernment, worldview challenge, and explicit yet non-coercive gospel witness. Conclusion: The article argues that faithful educator ministry in secular universities must preserve academic credibility and ethical restraint while remaining explicitly ordered to Christ rather than to generic moral uplift, procedural neutrality, or relativist pluralism.
